Middlesbrough College Student Awards 2016

Middlesbrough College held their annual student awards on 15th June 2016. Speaking to the 500 students, family, friends and employers assembled for the ceremony, Middlesbrough College Chief Executive and principal Zoe Lewis said that award winners should use their honours in their quest to pursue careers or further education.
One Awards attended the event and Sponsored the Access to Higher Education Student of the Year Award which was won by Ben Slater, an Access to HE Sports Studies Student. As Ben was unable to attend the event, Andrew Maguire (who nominated Ben) accepted the award on his behalf from Neale Coleman and Jennie Lawson from One Awards
Andrew Maguire said "Ben has excelled exceptionally well on his course. Having previously studied A Levels at sixth form and not achieving the grades he desired, he joined the College to further his chances of progressing to university. Ben came onto the course very shy and with very little self-belief to succeed. With the range of interactive lessons and varied assessment methods on the course, Ben soon found his feet and achieved Distinction grades across the board."
With Ben's improved confidence, he was able to secure work experience at James Cook University and North Yorkshire Physiotherapy. Ben applied for Physiotherapy at Sheffield Hallam University and was invited in for an interview. With his hard work ethic, excellent time management, intellectual knowledge and new found confidence, Ben was offered a place: a true testament to how hard work does pay off. It's only the starting steps for Ben in his career, but in the not too distant future he will make a fantastic physiotherapist.
Another Access to HE Student also won the Business, Management and Professional Student of the Year Award - Dawn Atkinson (pictured below) an Access to Humanities student was nominated by Ian Evans, Access to Humanities Tutor at Middlesbrough College.
Ian said "Dawn is perhaps the hardest working student we have ever taught on the Access to Humanities course. Dawn attends our evening class whilst continuing to in work full-time employment. She juggles her studies fantastically well around her other commitments and is a credit to the team. The depth of research she demonstrates in her work is already indicative of degree level study.
Dawn has been highly supportive of her peers, specifically supporting a particular student in their application to university. Her motivation and dedication to the course makes her a role model for others. Dawn has secured a place to study social work at degree level next year, and we wish he every success in her career ahead."
