Debbie is a tutor on the Access to HE Diploma at Bishop Auckland College. Four separate learners have nominated Debbie Rewcastle for the Learner’s Choice Award – here is a flavour of what they each had to say about Debbie:
‘Not only has Debbie been the most inspirational teacher and support giver, she has encouraged and enabled me to secure a place at university to study midwifery; an achievement I never thought would be possible.’
‘Debbie has also been a fantastic mentor throughout the course; she has always believed I could achieve my goal and that has encouraged me to move forward, even with the odds stacked against me. The influence Debbie has had on my learning journey has changed my life.’

Learners Choice for Tutor or Group of Tutors
Highly Commended - Ros Jackson, Sunderland College

Ros Jackson is the programme leader for the Access to Education Diploma at Sunderland College. Ros is an inspirational tutor who has motivated and encouraged our whole group with her dedication and brilliance. In addition to her commitment to her teaching Ros has organised events and visits that are way beyond the demands of the Access programme.
In November she organised a remembrance service in the foyer at Shiney Row Centre and at Washington Centres Hub. She wrote the programme, the prayers and the service which was delivered by Access students who were on the education pathway. Students of different faiths were included and involved in this ceremony and students from other courses participated as an audience in the prayers and during the one-minute silence.
In December Ros organised a Carol service, which was led by the students on the Access to Education Diploma. Other students who participated were from a huge variety of backgrounds and gave readings in Italian, performed songs from their own countries and read poetry in their own language.
At Easter Ros organised an Easter service led again by Access students, which involved carrying a cross from the centre of Sunderland to Tunstall Hill. The cross had also been decorated by Access students. Ros not only gives Access students a fantastic educational experience she goes above and beyond the course to give the students a cultural experience during their time on their Access course. She is truly an inspiring teacher and advocate of Access courses and she enables us all to achieve our potential.
