Safe and Secure Use of IT in the Workplace

Following the recent review, Ofsted was asked, among other things, to evaluate the extent to which Learning Providers teach Students to adopt safe and responsible practices in using new technologies; in response to increased demand from our members, One Awards have developed a suite of accredited units from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2 aimed at addressing this need. Keen to innovate and to add value to their student’s experience, Stockton Riverside College have been amongst the first in the region to pilot these.

The majority of the college’s Foundation Students are working towards this accredited unit at Entry Level 3 and Level 1 and are making good progress. The Tutor reports that all of the students are really enjoying the course are engaged and can really relate to it, the units are very practical and functional. In particular, they have enjoyed making ‘Silly Selfies’ then looking at the safety aspects and implications of sending selfies or using them on social media.

An interesting addition to the college based learning has been the introduction of an external speaker, Dale Metcalfe, from Stockton Borough Council Community Safety Team, who delivered an engaging and interactive session on online safety.

In feedback from the students, they revealed that they are learning a lot about using IT and are really enjoying the sessions.

Upon evaluation of the unit assessment criteria, the tutor felt that this could include safe use of social networking. One Awards welcome this feedback and will look to accommodate this development during Spring unit review.

With the ever increasing use of mobile technology and social media, this 2 credit unit which is available from Entry Level 1 to Level 2 will develop the learner's understanding of the use of mobile technologies and social networking websites within the workplace. The unit explores the differences between appropriate and inappropriate uses of workplace-based mobile technologies and social networking.

Details of the units may be found here
