Phlebotomy Training in Practice
The medical field is made up of many exciting careers requiring a range of skills and varying degrees of patient interaction. Phlebotomy is an essential area of medicine that requires scientific know-how, technical aptitude and good interpersonal skills.
Understanding and Applying Phlebotomy Skills and Techniques is Accredited by One Awards - at level 3 with 3 credits.
It is an excellent introduction to phlebotomy that will give learners all the skills required to take blood safely and effectively and enables them to develop a sound and repeatable practical technique backed by theory to explain why they are doing what we are teaching.
One Awards are proud to work with Phlebotomy Training Services (PTS) the first phlebotomy training company in the UK to provide accredited and certificated programmes of learning.
Learners will not be expected to take live blood from each other on this course.
The first (mainly theoretical) day comprises of:
- The background to phlebotomy
- Health and safety in phlebotomy
- Infection Control
- Anatomy and Physiology of the arm
- Site selection – good and bad veins
- Complications that can arise when taking blood
- Needlestick Injuries what they are and what to do
- How to use a tourniquet
- What is expected of a phlebotomists
- The importance of correct patient identification and informed consent
- At the end of the first day all participants are given a multiple choice quiz to complete – and have to achieve a minimum standard to continue on to:
The second (mainly practical) day which comprises of:
- A summary of the most common blood tests taken
- The technique of venepuncture
- The process of taking blood
- A guide to the different types of equipment used in venepuncture and how to use them
- The day includes a period of role play using pads attached to the antecubital fossa area, a period of one to one supervised practice using an artificial arm to improve technique and a 20 minute clinical assessment of each candidate.
Upon completion of the course the participants are required to undertake a programme of home study and to produce 5 short pieces of written work.
It's a great testament: Phlebotomy Training Services have trained over 15,000 people to take blood over the years and have worked with local and national healthcare providers in the public and private sector. Clear examples of the success of this unit come from the feedback received.
