Unit of the Month - March 2022 - Understanding Progression towards Employment in the Green Sector
24th February 2022 Date of publication
According to recent surveys, half of young people want jobs that protect the planet and consider sustainable sectors to offer a more secure career path. The majority would prefer to work for an environmentally sustainable business
Green jobs, including those in renewable energy, are becoming increasingly attractive, ranking 10% more attractive than being a social media influencer and 8% more attractive than working in retail. While working in the fossil fuel sector is the least attractive sector, with just 6% of those surveyed saying they would like a career in it.
As we all work towards the global challenges posed by achieving net zero and pledges made at COP26, it is evident that we will require a highly skilled workforce to help reduce environmental risks and ecological scarcities and support outcomes of improved social and economic equity and human well-being.
How would you explain ‘Green Jobs’?
Green jobs are decent jobs that contribute to preserve or restore the environment, be they in traditional sectors such as manufacturing and construction, or in new, emerging green sectors such as renewable energy and energy efficiency.
