August Unit of the Month - Delivering a Chair-based Exercise Programme

One Awards centre, Wellbeing for Life, based in County Durham deliver one-to-one and group activities and programmes for anyone living or working in County Durham who want to improve their physical or mental health.
Wellbeing for Life wanted to implement a Chair-Based Exercise accredited programme of learning that their staff and volunteers could complete to enable them to deliver exercise programmes to service users in a wide variety of community care and recreational settings. Chair-based exercise can help both physical and mental health, increasing flexibility, strength, co-ordination, circulation, memory recall and confidence, as well all being lots of fun!
The Level 2 unit enables individuals to gain the skills, knowledge and competencies, understand the values and principles of adult social care and the ability to plan and deliver chair-based exercise to older adults and/or those less able, keeping active.
Marnie Ramsey Capacity Building Lead at Wellbeing for Life said “We developed the chair-based exercise unit as we wanted to run a programme that met the needs of our staff, volunteers and the wider community. We worked collaboratively with One Awards from our initial brief to create a unit at the right level ensuring a consistent standard for all staff volunteers who complete the training and go on to deliver the exercise programme out in the community.“
